Introduction

The Motor Yacht Club was officially founded on 15 May 1905 by the Royal Automobile Club “to encourage and foster the sport of motor boating and Yachting”. Described by The Motor Boat magazine as “A motorboat club of high tone” to be “simply and solely a social club which, besides organising a generous programme of events for its members, would also conduct a number of open motorboat contests and trials”.

The Admiralty Warrant to wear the blue ensign was granted to the Motor Yacht Club in 1906 and the “Royal” status was conferred upon the club by King George V in 1910 which henceforth has been known as “The Royal Motor Yacht Club”.

Since the first luxurious Clubhouse, on board the floating former paddle boat “Enchantress”, further floating and one shore based clubhouse have ensued, the RMYC arrived at its current site in 1936.

Today the RMYC retains the nation’s senior “UK Motorboat Club” status and continues to enjoy a very active and varied and social calendar both on and off the water. To discover further details of the Club’s past please visit the History pages.

The club now embraces both sailing and motor boating members, of which there are around 1600, benefitting from a recently refurbished clubhouse with magnificent views boasting unrivalled function facilities, accommodation, and a yacht haven, full details of which follow in this section.
